Pet Insurance Glossary

This glossary explains common words used in pet insurance conversations and policy documents. Definitions are general orientation, not contract interpretations: a policy’s own wording and state rules control. Ask the insurer or a licensed producer to explain a term as it applies to your coverage.

Accident
A sudden event causing injury as defined by the policy. Exact wording controls what counts as accidental versus illness-related.
Accident-only coverage
A product category focused on covered accidental injuries, without the broader illness benefits of accident-and-illness plans.
Accident-and-illness coverage
A product category that includes covered accidents and covered illnesses, still subject to exclusions, limits and waiting periods.
Annual limit
A cap on what the insurer pays during a policy year under the applicable coverage terms.
Benefit schedule
A reimbursement design that pays set amounts by procedure or condition rather than a simple percentage of the invoice.
Claim
A request for benefits after veterinary care, usually with invoices and medical records.
Congenital condition
A condition present from birth as defined by the policy; may be limited or excluded.
Declarations page
A summary listing named insured, pet, policy period, premium, deductible, reimbursement, limits and riders.
Deductible (excess)
The amount you cover before reimbursement applies, which may be annual or per incident depending on the form.
Eligible charges
Costs that meet policy definitions after exclusions, waiting periods and other conditions.
Endorsement / rider
An amendment that adds, removes or changes coverage, such as an exam-fee rider or wellness rider.
Exam fee
The charge for a veterinary office visit examination; sometimes excluded unless a rider applies.
Exclusion
Policy language identifying situations, conditions or services that are limited or not covered.
Hereditary condition
A condition with a genetic component as defined by the policy; treatment may be limited or excluded.
Illness
A sickness or disease as defined by the policy, distinct from accidental injury in many forms.
Per-incident deductible
A deductible that can apply separately to each unrelated incident rather than once per policy year.
Pre-existing condition
A health issue with signs, symptoms or treatment before coverage or before waiting periods end, as the policy defines it. Commonly excluded.
Premium
The price of the policy for a stated period, often billed monthly.
Reimbursement percent
The share of eligible charges the insurer pays after the deductible under a percentage design (for example 70%, 80% or 90%).
Usual and customary
A pricing reference some policies use when limiting reimbursable amounts relative to regional norms; details are form-specific.
Veterinary discount plan
A membership discount arrangement with participating clinics; Triple-I notes these are not insurance and are regulated differently.
Waiting period
Time after enrollment before certain benefits begin. Accident, illness and orthopedic waits can differ.
Wellness / well-care coverage
Benefits aimed at preventive care such as exams, vaccines or parasite prevention, separate from illness reimbursement in many designs.

Use the glossary alongside the declarations page and definitions section of your policy. NAIC’s pet insurance topic explains product categories, exclusions and the Pet Insurance Model Act at a high level. Triple-I’s facts and statistics pages provide additional consumer orientation and industry context with dated sources.

Using terms with PawMath calculators

When a tool asks for claimable bills, it means amounts you believe are eligible under the contract you are modelling—not every veterinary dollar. When it asks for deductible remaining, match annual versus per-incident rules. When it asks for reimbursement percent, confirm you are not on a benefit schedule that needs a different worksheet.

PawMath is independent education, not an insurer or veterinary clinic. Glossary wording cannot bind a carrier or replace professional advice.
